Comprehension Strategies
SummarizingDescription: The strategy of Summarizing helps students take away the main points of text, ignoring irrelevant information for a more concise understanding. Summarizing text allows student to have a better memory of what they read.
Purpose: The purpose of the Summarizing strategy is for the student to have a better understanding or better comprehend what they read by consolidating important details from the text. Procedure: 1. Introduce the students to the material to be read. 2. Students should follow along or participate in the read-aloud 3. Teachers should ask the students the following framework of questions: • What are the main ideas? • What are the crucial details necessary for supporting the ideas? • What information is irrelevant or unnecessary? 4. Students should be guided throughout the summary writing process, using key words or phrases to identify the main points from the text. 5. Students should successfully be able to write short summaries, and refine them until their pieces consist of only the essential and relevant information from the text. Classroom Integration: • To summarize a story during language arts time • To summarize what was learned in a science lesson • To review and summarize main events in a story Variation: Guide students throughout the summary writing process and write their answers instead of having them write them. Have students work together to answer summary questions and write responses. • Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events. How Writing is Tied into the Strategy: The Summarizing strategy has students producing summaries about the selected reading material they have been assigned. This strategy can tie in writing by having students provide written summaries instead of typical verbal sum-ups. The students written summaries would use writing to demonstrate the essential and relevant information to provide the main idea of the text. The writing draws conclusions that are obtained from the details presented in the reading material. (Common Core State Standards, 2010, p. 43) |
Videos of Summarizing (eHowEducation, 2013)
Video: A middle school teacher introduces the summarizing strategy by walking you through a lesson. This lesson has students write a summary by using 20 key words from the text being read. Instruction: This video provides a lesson plan example for teachers to use and incorporate the strategy of summarizing with students. It provides an actual working example of how it has been used with students in a classroom setting that can be immediately adjusted and implemented in a teacher’s classroom. Student Engagement: This video helps students understand the process for using the summarizing process and offers a lesson plan that can be used for immediate implementation. Assessment: The teacher could assess student knowledge and understanding after presenting the video by asking the students what the benefits this strategy could have in the classroom. (Swanner, 2012)
Video: This slide show presentation provides a definition, benefits and rationale for using this strategy. The slide show share basic signal words and provides an example of the strategy in action. Instruction: This video provides a resource for teachers who would like to see a demonstration of the Semantic Feature Analysis process. After seeing this video, a student would be able to incorporate this strategy to make comparisons with many curricular topics. Student Engagement: This video helps students understand the process for using the Summarizing technique by providing an example of an actual summary example. Assessment: The teacher could assess student knowledge and understanding after presenting the video. The assessment could include questions specifically related to the definition or rationale of this strategy. |
